Food Systems


Food can create major greenhouse gas emissions depending on how it’s grown, processed, packaged, and transported. Eating local food helps avoid these emissions. (US beef or wheat for cake mix is often trucked over 5,000 miles.) Climate change is beginning to threaten the ability to grow food. This trend is expected to worsen. The
advantages of growing food locally are now
being recognized.

What the City is Doing So Far

  • Giving strong support for the Santa Fe Farmers Market, including a permanent building
  • Doing preliminary planning for the creation of community gardens
  • Proposed Actions
  • Set targets for local food production.
  • Design and implement a City Harvest program to create food growing, processing, storing, and selling opportunities within the City.
  • Identify and reduce barriers - legal, economic, educational, etc. to urban agriculture including the retailing of food.
  • Dedicate municipal water resources to food production.
  • Work with City departments to increase the availability of land and resources for food, including waste conversion.
  • Develop a plan to promote “Yard to Table.”
  • Map and inventory productive land for
    growing food.
  • Create a matching program between those who would like to garden and those who have available space.
  • Include food-growing opportunities in all affordable housing, programs for homeless and low-income people, as well as therapy for those with mental and physical disabilities and for “at-risk” youth, and former inmates.
  • Develop neighborhood centers for food-related processes including shared greenhouses, food storage, and kitchens.
  • Provide educational resources for re-using
    gray water, rooftop gardens, and organic
    food production.
  • Develop guidelines based on traditional and appropriate dryland gardening techniques.
  • Explore the feasibility of adding acres of intensive greenhouses such as the urban model “Growing Power” after a pilot project has been adapted to local conditions.
  • Develop a Foodshed (within the 300 miles range) Program in collaboration with regional partners.
