WHAT IS YOUTH ALLIES FOR SUSTAINABILITY?

The Youth Allies program is a forum where young people from various cultures can work together to address community needs. The Youth Allies program builds cultural and leadership skills among high school students so they can take leadership roles in the greater community.  Students will have the opportunity to act as leaders in their communities by serving on non-profit Boards, City Commissions, educational committees, and/or leading a community project of their own design while receiving on-going mentoring and training.

High school students will build their leadership capacity through experience with and trainings in the environment, colonization, diversity, and social justice. This program seeks to provide future leaders with the skills to address the real causes of issues and find actions they can take towards solutions.

Youth Allies will also provide high school students the opportunity to meet and socialize with like-minded individuals from schools throughout Santa Fe and New Mexico as well as network with other teens involved in a national and international youth movement.

Youth Allies is a collaborative program of the non-profit organizations Earth Care International, the Santa Fe Mountain Center’s Native American Emergence Program, and other local non-profit youth organizations.

Sustainability Courses: High School

WHAT IS SUSTAINABILITY EDUCATION?

SUSTAINABILITY EDUCATION connects issues of the environment, social justice, equitable economics, and culture to understand and find solutions to today's complex global and local issues.

Earth Care offers innovative and inspiring educators and courses on sustainability for secondary schools. Our courses engage high school students in ways that get them excited about learning and school.

OUR EDUCATORS hold a Bachelor’s, while most have Master’s degree and are either certified teachers in New Mexico or are currently in the certification program.

OUR PEDAGOGY is student-focused with a hands-on and experiential learning approach. Our students “learn-by-doing” and participate in creative change projects in their schools and community. Our pedagogy encourages students to become reflective learners, an important skill for higher thinking and doing.

STANDARDS BASED COURSES… Our courses are aligned to many of the New Mexico State Standards and can be offered as elective courses in science and social studies to reinforce learning in the core areas.

Earth Care International can work with your high school to develop sustainability education courses and school or community based service learning projects that include standards in:

  • History

  • English

  • Economics

  • Environmental Science

  • Cultural Studies

  • Health

What teens have to say about One World after being open for six months:

“The coffee shop is my home. I love it here and I speak for a lot of teenagers in saying it gives me a healthy environment to be safe and stay out of trouble. It fulfills me and gives me, a confused teenager trying to figure out how I fit into the world, a place to help the environment and make it better.”

“I’ve learned, as with almost every Earth Care project, that anything is possible!”

“Just having a place to go as a teenager, where I can be with my peers without being shunned or harassed, is incredibly wonderful. There’s nowhere else like that.”

“I went through a lot of hard times and One World has been so, so great for me (a life savor, if you will). Such a friendly and clean environment.”

“One World provides a strong foundation to organize my life around.”
