On the evening of Wednesday December 7, Earth Care’s Youth Allies partnered with students from the United World College to speak out in support of the NM Carbon Cap at the Environmental Improvement Board hearing.
The action included a march from Warehouse 21 to the PERA State building followed by testimonials by several youth in front the of the EIB.
Marcia Barton, long time teacher partner of Earth Care, had the following to say about the action:
“I just wanted to tell you how impressed I was with the action and testimonies of the Youth Allies last night! The creativity and energy behind the protest was palpable and exciting. And yet, as the youth entered the room for the Environmental Improvement Board’s hearing on keeping or repealing New Mexico’s Carbon Cap on carbon dioxide emissions, they were totally respectful and appropriate in their behavior. Wow! They were masterful in their testimony, and it was so powerful to hear their voices about this climate change issue that impacts us all.
Afterwards, a member of the EIB, told me how impressed she was with the youth that were testifying! She was sincere in her appreciation of their heartfelt words, and I think the testimony of the members of the Youth Allies had a great impact on the EIB. We shall see what they do with it.
I can’t tell you how deeply touched and impacted I was by them and all the work that Earth Care is doing with them. One of the things it showed me was how mutually beneficial a relationship between Santa Fe High and Earth Care can be – that it is a great link up and perhaps we can strengthen it even more in the future.
Kudos to Youth Allies and Earth Care! You are doing great work!”
